Micky McGill is arguably the most colourful character in The Betfather Team. Micky is a proud Irishman and is our expert on anything with four legs on the Emerald Isle. A loyal follower of leading trainer Aidan O’Brien, Micky believes that the master of Ballydoyle could train the stable cat to win a race! He is never more vocal than when O’Brien sends a raiding party to England and provides a well-informed (if slightly biased) guide to his runners.
When the flat season ends, all roads lead to the Cheltenham in March for Irish Micky. Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott dominated the Festival meeting in 2018 and Micky fully expects the trend to continue. He also claimed the bragging rights in the Aintree Grand National as Elliott’s well-backed Tiger Roll held off the Mullins-trained Pleasant Company in a thrilling finish. Micky’s equine hero is the mighty Arkle, the winner of three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups.
Micky’s exuberance can test the patience of his colleagues at times but every good racing team needs someone to act the clown. Think of Channel 4’s John McCririck or ITV’s Matt Chapman! When Irish Micky is on a winner, you can be sure that everyone else will get to hear about it!
